Away We Go

Blogger is for the birds. It's making me crazy. I hate how it looks and I hate how messed up all my posting has been for the last few months.

I'm closing up shop and taking it over to Wordpress. If you stop by here regularly using the ameskenny.blogspot.com address, note that you will shortly (hopefully) have to check amykenny.ca for thrilling, up-to-the-minute (mostly) updates on where I am writing, painting, crafting leather, eating lunch, dancing at shows, petting my dog, etc.

Let the techno-mess commence!

Peroti

Here is a thing you must try. A peroti - courtesy of Vagabond Street Foods in Whitehorse, YT.

I ate so many of these during the four or five days I was there and I think of them every day. Finally tried my hand at making them last night and ooohhhhhhh. So good.

1) Make curried potatoes according to your fave recipe.

2) Stuff them into a wrap or pita pocket.

3) Cover with shredded mozzarella.

4) Scoop some mango chutney on top.

5) Grill if you have the means.

I meant to take a picture of this to entice you, but I accidentally inhaled the thing, so you'll just have to take my word.

Here is a completely unrelated photo of progress so far on the Brown Album paintings. The long one of all five of them isn't related to a song - just an extra one I did when I realized I forgot a wall's worth of space.

Look how smarmy Robbie is. Don't believe me? Read this, then see how you feel about him.

Nice Toolin' Tex

I'm trying to stick to the queue of orders I have lined up, but I'm really itching to start on the latest - the western guitar strap.

Its order-er wants the liner to be a shade of maroon I can only acheive by staining veg-tanned leather, so I get to line the whole thing with a beautiful Belgian hide. This is going to allow me to finish the edge smooth as glass (something I can't do with regular liners because of the way they're treated) and tool a hidden inscription inside the strap - a deatil I think it going to look awesome.

Check out the hardware I bought for it...

Don Your Red Riding Hood...

Deep Dark Woods.

These guys are awesome. I remember hearing them on Q some months ago and falling in love. I don't know how I forgot to get full-blown obsessed with them at the time, but I plan to remedy that starting today.

WORLD DOMINATION

Shoot from the Hip is soon to be international!

I'm tooling up some stock for The Snug - a new shop opening in the Isle of Man.

Their merch will include home decor and outdoor gear like multi-fuel stoves, hip flasks (my contribution), BBQ, fire pit and picnic implements, and cozy home accessories like sheepskin rugs and hot water bottles.

I'll link as soon as they have their website up and running.

Going!

Guess who I am going to see tonight?

I love love love the background on their website.

The Real Deal

I just got a custom order from an honest-to-goodness Texan - a Western-style guitar strap (a la the Wild Filly strap, minus the "filly") for her husband. The pressure is on!

I am Kinetic Energy

If I can manage to sit still and listen for a minute, I hear a buzz.

Is it coming from my heart or my head?

Ohhhhhh, there is so much to do. I need to make myself a calendar and list a strict schedule. Events. Obligations. Things that must be done each day. I generally do this every week anyway, but I always leave a little wiggle room.

There is no wiggle room in May! It's sunny and I'm spazzy and I just drank way more coffee than the detox program says is acceptable - a guideline I was sticking to until today. My arms have that metallic feeling you get in your mouth when you eat way too much of something too sweet in one spoonful. Know what I mean? No? You need to eat more sweets.

Anyway, I finally figured out all my images for this show and the sizes of canvas I need to get. I have primed seven of the surfaces I already had kicking around, so now it's time for a dog walk to Mixed Media, to inquire about ordering.

After that, I have a flask and a wallet to get in the mail and almost a dozen custom flasks to finish up.

On top of that, Timeraiser is tonight at the McMaster Innovation Park. It runs 7-10pm and there is some very nice work for auction, so you should all come out and bid. At the kickoff party a few weeks ago I spoke with a couple of last year's participants and they all got to volunteer at some pretty cool places - the Sound of Music Festival, Russ Ohrt's Backyard Harvest, Shalom Village. All kinds of stuff. Come on out.

Feeling Brown

I feel like a boiling teakettle.

June's Casbah show?

The Brown Album. Twelve paintings, each one named for and featuring my visual interpretation of a single song from The Band's second (and best) 1969 release.

I'm going to buy canvas tomorrow. In the meantime, I could explode at any moment. Excited!

Tuesday, April 20, 2010

Tuesday = Boo-sday

I botched the only thing I worked on today, so nothing to report here.

Tonight I'm going to the Casbah to check out wall space and tomorrow I'm going to buy enough canvas to fill it. Huzzah!

Working for the Weekend

Even though I spent the weekend almost exclusively riding my bike and watching episodes of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (come on, everyone deserves a sloth-style weekend once in a while), I managed to accomplish a handful of real-world goals.

This June I'm going to have a slew of new paintings on display at Hamilton's Casbah Lounge. Thanks to Brodie for having me!

Also, I'm very excited to be working on a piece for the fall issue of Tidings Magazine - a gourmet food and wine mag full of fantastic wine reviews, local features and (my favourite) food and wine-related travel pieces.

It's the summer of George!

My piece on the GWTA is in this month's Canadian Geographic - the travel issue.

If you can't find a hard copy, I'll link to the article as soon as it's online.

The National

Hey friends! Shoot From the Hip is almost coast to coast. I just have to conquer the east!

In a couple weeks, you'll be able to pick up jewellery and accessories at Propelller Clothing in B.C.'s Okanagan Valley!

I'll let you know when the goods are in and good to go.

Cock of the Walk

Indeed!

Big Business

All right, so I didn't wake up Monday morning intending to maybe kind-of-sort-of start another business-ish venture. But it happened.

Some back story...

I've been wearing second-hand stuff for as long as I've been around. It happens when you have boatloads of older siblings and cousins and it happens extra hard when you were a teenager in the 90s.

Point is I've known a lot of really amazing vintage clothing in my day. And I've had to say goodbye to my fair share of pieces as well - pieces that I:

- Loved, but no longer wore.

- Never wore though I thought I would.

- Bought despite the dress being 10 sizes too big or small because I thought I would learn to sew.

- Bought despite the pants being 10 sizes too big or small because I thought I would take them to a tailor.

- Bought despite the shirt being 10 sizes too big or small because I couldn't handle the thought of walking away from such a sweet score even if I would never be able to use it for anything other than a tent.

And as much as it gladdens (If "sadden" can be a word I don't see why "gladden" can't) me to imagine that someone will snag my own former finds at Value Village, or Goodwill, or Sally Ann, and thrill to such a sweet kill in the second-hand clothing hunt, it's hard to say goodbye. How does one say goodbye? Forever? To things one has had longer than some friends?

Goodbye dear outfits! It's not that I don't love you anymore. It's just that, for whatever reason, I feel we've run our course. I can't explain it. Don't let me cheapen things with words. Let me just say thank you for the good times. To you, tight bellbottoms, for that St. Patrick's Day when the paremedic hit on me. To you, repurposed skirt, for covering my rear as I trekked across Europe. To you, legions of baseball T's, for being sporty and sexy through thick and thin. To you, printed polyester buttondowns, for making me feel that much closer to Siamese Dream-era Billy Corgan. And to you tie-dyed sundress...I...I think I'll miss you most of all.

I wish I could be there with you when you go for good, to ensure that the thrifter who finds you loves you as well as I did. I wish I could adopt you out like a Cabbage Patch doll, with papers and promises and certificates, but alas! This is not the way of things and we must be brave...

Or must we?

Rare Bird Vintage. Strut my stuff.

Spring Cleaning!

Sean decided to do the Wild Rose Herbal Detox and I, being the supportive girlfriend I am, agreed to join him, if only so we don't have to make six different meals a day instead of three.

I'm not overly psyched about it because it rules out about 89% of my staples - bread, dairy, chocolate, booze and bananas - but I am interested to see what happens over the next 12 days because I have suspicions that the ever-present exhaustion I experience might have something to do with the amount of sugar I eat. It is significant. Both in terms of naturally occuring sugars and candy, which I enjoy daily. This detox allows sugar in apple form only (not including those of the chocolate or toffee-covered variety), so either I will start to feel less crash-and-burn-y, or my head will explode from sugar withdrawal.

Anywhooooo, check out the tree-hugging hippie haul we picked up at Bulk Barn yesterday. Not pictured there is the soy milk I used to make my breakfast oatmeal (tastes a little less like cardboard if you put cinnamon and a bushel of apples on it). Also not pictured there is my gagging face when some of the soy milk touched my thumb.

Further down, check out another a (completely unrelated) belt I am working on.

Oh man. I am lining something with this material. I don't know what the design is going to be, but I have the name picked out - The Boldly Go Bag.

Belts on the Brain

Because I don't know when to say when, I have started and scrapped three belts since I first posted my peacock friend the other day.

Number four seems to be going well so far. I stopped working on him a few minuntes ago. I could feel myself getting squirelly from hours of carving, cutting and tooling and knew the time was ripe for mistakes, so it was better to just take a break.

Hey, come out to this tonight! The kick-off party for Hamilton's 2nd annual Timeraiser is at the Tap Haus (the actual event is April 22nd).

I will be there, dropping off my Pigott painting, alone and scared of random socialization, so feel free to save me from my own debilitating awkwardness. Ways you might do this include:

- Bringing me a drink.

- Starting a conversation about something I know well enough to feel comfortable discussing with perfect strangers, ie: Northern Exposure, Jian Ghomeshi, candy, or mid-late-90's alternative mosh pits. Also, Perfect Strangers.

Cock of the Walk

I don't care if peacocks are "out."

I've been into them since, at 17, I visited Royal Roads University in Victoria and found out they're everywhere there. Un-zoo-kept. Free-range peacocks who just happen to live in the area and strut their stuff around campus, waiting for you to hand-feed them things. It's wild. And an exotic Canadian mascot when placed next to all our plain brown icons like moose, beavers and bears.

Anywhooooo, it's those west coast hoser birds that inspired this belt - not the last year's wave of peacock earrings and H&M dresses (though I do love those as well).

I held my breath for the entire two hours it took to get the belt to this point. I plan to finish up this week and submit it at next week's meeting of the Hamilton chapter of the CSCL, for consideration to be included in this year's submission for the Weston Trophy. A single too-long cut, a smudge of dye, or a tool out of place and I look like a hack, so hold your breath with me tomorrow and Thursday.

Here he is so far. Nude and un-tooled.

Cinch It

How quickly I turn from "grateful for seven days of sun" to "miserable about a single day of dreary skies." As though the weather owes me something.

Ah well. Keeps me inside, which gives me time to work on what's below - a corset belt (still working on the design) and a classic roll-style bicycle seat bag.

Not much to see here right now, but I just relisted a bunch of golden oldie items in the online shop. Check it out.

Holiday Happiness

Happy Easter to those who celebrate it and happy (upcoming) discount chocolate Tuesday to all!

I'm busy with family lunches, farming, eventually finding a patio and then soaking up some Budos Band, so nothing new today, but I hope to be back in fine posting form tomorrow.

I hope you have Good Friday off and I hope you enjoy it to the max.

PS - does this weather make everyone else feel like a complete hippie spazz too, or is it just me? I love everything under the sun!

For Your Yet-To-Be-Published Manuscript

As I hope to have one of these soon (a completed manuscript that is), I figured I should ready something snazzy to carry it around in.

You know, for all the meetings I'll be attending to discuss things like film options and whatnot.

Anyway...

Behold! The Double Agent Portfolio - for the writer pushing his/her first piece, acting as artist and agent to save a dime or two.

Made of my main squeeze hide. Lined with purple suede. Kept under lock by twin agents of freedom (and hopefully fortune).

Awesomer than a Speeding Bullet

An old Tandy sissybar bag design - meant for motorcycles, retrofitted for bodies, intended for camera nerds. I call it the Daily Planet Purse.

This is my first attempt and there are already some things I'll do differently on my next one.

1) Line the strap to make it a little more heavy-duty. Some people probably know how to take care of nice things, but I try to deisgn for myself because I am crazy hard on stuff (especially bags) and I want to offer pieces worth their price tags. Pieces that last.

2) I love the look of the buckles, but I might try this design with a variety of closures including snaps and twist locks, just because I'm really awful at cutting circular shapes. These straps came off not too bad, but less slick than I would like.

3) Interior lining. I don't necessarily want to do it with leather or suede because that makes the whole thing harder, both for me to stitch and people to afford. I'm thinking of vintage fabric. I did this way back on the first wallet I ever made, but stopped after that because I worried the fabric would fray and end up looking really shitty. However, I've been using that wallet for a year now and the lining is doing well, so maybe I'll take a swing at lining a purse the same way.

Anyway, I'm looking to sell this discount-style because it does have imperfections and I'd like to hear how it wears/holds up/suggestions.

Let me know if you're interested, or I'll be forced to test it myself. Oh darn!

Burned Out

You'll have to forgive my lack of posting. I spent most of the last two days doing/recovering from this and more of this.

Regular posting, including pictures of projects, should resume this week.

The Old Switcheroo

Re-arranged. It may still look pretty rammed with stuff, but believe me, there is so much more space in this room now.

Take a look. Now that the working environment is up to par, there's no excuse. Time to start working? Agreed!

Below you will see that I'm stitching up a suede-lined portfolio according to a very old Tandy pattern kit. Giddy up. The Pony Express is coming through.

Also getting ready to start stitching up a country guitar strap for some wild woman out there. I used oil dye for this and I'm extremely happy with the result. The colour is rich and uniform and the dye goes on so much more easily than the Eco-Flow I've been using for a year.

Down sides include the stink (thoughthat's what windows are for, no?) and the fact that this stuff seeps right through the sheep's wool I use to apply it, which means it gets all over my hands without my realizing it and ends up on my face. For days. Because it's not quite as washable as the Eco-Flow.

Small price to pay.

Mr. Clean

Every so often I am overcome by a panicky desire to clean the house and get rid of stuff.

Today it was brought on by an inability to function in my studio yesterday. I'm overhauling the place.

Pictures to come.

Buy the Cow, Get the Leather for Free

It's been a while since I visited Tundra and spent some serious money, so I rewarded myself by visiting Tundra and spending some serious money.

My new toys include, but are not limited to:

- An entire cow's worth of hide - half my favourite chocolate brown leather and half a good heavy tooling leather.

- Silver conchos, silver buckles and brass buckles.

- Some Feibing's oil dye, which I'm going to try my hand at because I can't handle the inconsistency of the Eco-Flo stains anymore.

- Purse, bag and portfolio patterns.

Take a look. Things are in the works. Probably too many to have started at once, but this is the way I work. Spastically and in ten different places at once.
